About Canicada Dam

Caniçada dam is located in the Gerês mountains of northern Portugal on the river Cávado, within the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Completed in 1955, the double-curvature arch dam stands 76 metres tall and holds 159.3 million cubic metres. As part of the Cávado hydroelectric cascade, the dam generates renewable energy while its reservoir has become one of the most scenic lakes in northern Portugal. Surrounded by dense forests of oak and pine on steep mountain slopes, the lake offers water sports and recreational activities within the protected national park setting. The area is rich in biodiversity and historical heritage, with Roman milestones and medieval granaries visible along the surrounding trails.
