About Montargil Dam

Montargil dam is located in the central Alentejo on the river Sor, a tributary of the Sorraia which feeds into the Tagus. Completed in 1958, the earth dam stands 33 metres tall and holds 164.3 million cubic metres. The reservoir is one of the most popular recreational lakes in Portugal, known for its warm waters and extensive shoreline with beaches. Montargil serves primarily for irrigation of the Sor valley and hydroelectric generation. The area has become a significant domestic tourism destination, with resorts and water sports facilities along the lake shores. The surrounding Alentejo landscape of golden wheat fields and olive groves adds to its appeal.
