About Alvito Dam

Alvito dam is located in the Alentejo region on the river Odivelas, part of the Sado river basin. Completed in 1976, the earth dam stands 48 metres tall and holds 132.5 million cubic metres. The reservoir serves primarily for irrigation of the Alentejo farmlands and water supply to the town of Alvito and surrounding communities. The dam is part of the broader Alqueva irrigation system that has transformed agriculture in the region. The surrounding landscape is quintessentially Alentejan: vast plains under open skies, punctuated by white-walled villages and ancient megalithic monuments.
