About Torrao Dam

Torrão dam is located on the river Tâmega near the town of Marco de Canaveses in the Douro Litoral region of northern Portugal. Completed in 1988, the gravity dam stands 60 metres tall and holds 123.9 million cubic metres. The dam serves primarily for hydroelectric generation, taking advantage of the Tâmega's significant flow as the largest tributary of the Douro within Portuguese territory. The reservoir stretches upstream through a narrow valley surrounded by vineyards and small agricultural holdings. The Tâmega valley has been a focus of new dam construction, with the Alto Tâmega, Daivões, and Gouvães dams recently completed upstream as part of Portugal's largest ever hydroelectric investment.
