About Ribeiradio Dam

Ribeiradio dam is one of Portugal's newest hydroelectric facilities, completed in 2015 on the river Vouga in the central Beira Litoral region. The gravity dam stands 75 metres tall and holds 136.4 million cubic metres. It forms part of a two-dam system with the smaller Ermida dam downstream, designed for reversible pump-storage hydroelectric generation. The project was one of the last major dam constructions in Portugal under the National Programme for Dams with High Hydroelectric Potential. The reservoir occupies a valley surrounded by eucalyptus and pine forests in the hinterland behind the coastal city of Aveiro.
